Sometimes it's hard to get your tail moving!

Some days it’s not getting yourself out there to run that’s the hard part, it’s getting through the first kilometre (or mile, if that’s how you roll!). So Kiki asked some women runners what their tricks are to get past the mental block of just getting their tails moving! Here’s a few of the things they had to say. If you’ve got other thoughts or ideas, we’d love to hear about them in the comments. Accept that the first km/mile is the hardest and remind yourself that all you need to do is start slow and steady and enjoy the run because you'll feel great when you're done. (Definitely the #1 with many people having a version of what Kiki...

Rethinking those safe social distances

In these Covid-19 times, outdoor exercise is still OK in many places so walking, biking, and running are welcome activities. However, a new European study shows it is important to avoid each other's slipstream when doing these activities. This info is the result of a study by engineers and aerodynamicists at KU Leuven in Belgium and Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands. We’ve typically been told that appropriate and effective social distancing is 1 to 2 metres, but that’s really only effective when you are standing still inside or with minimal wind outside. But going for a walk, run, or bike ride you should be more careful. When someone breathes, sneezes, or coughs during a run, those particles remain...

It’s OK to take a break

2019 was a difficult year for me as I dealt with multiple injuries and setbacks, one after the other. At times, I felt very overwhelmed and frustrated as I had so much planned, including my first half marathon. As the year is coming to a close, I have learned that I really couldn’t have planned or prevented these setbacks but I can chose to deal with them in a healthy way. With not being able to run for more than two months, I had a lot of time to reflect and came up with a list of things I could do to show my body, mind and spirit some love. Fresh air: A simple 20-minute walk outdoors can make you...

How to be a poser . . . for race photos

I love race photos. I instinctively pose whenever I see a race photographer on the course. Even if I’m dying during a race, I’ll still muster up a smile. I love race photos so much that I have started to volunteer at races to take free race photos for others. So now I have experience both as a runner and a photographer, here are some tips for getting the best photos of yourself on the run. Run on either side of the course. The photographers are likely on either side of the course. If you are running in the middle, especially if it’s a crowded course, either you will not see them or they will not see you. Strike a...

Less time in the kitchen – more time to run

or·gan·i·za·tion (n): the action of organizing something With having such a busy schedule, a 2-plus-hour commute and training for a half marathon, I need to stay organized. Planning my weekly groceries and meal prepping is a part of my routine and our household doesn’t function well without it. I also like to keep a tight grocery budget and keep our food waste to a minimum. All these steps keep me fueled, on track and on budget. A little back story about meal prep and why it’s important to me: When asked what type of “diet” I follow, I usually cringe. I spent my teenage years obsessing over calories and macronutrients, weighing and measuring everything I would consume. I sacrificed a...
