In these Covid-19 times, outdoor exercise is still OK in many places so walking, biking, and running are welcome activities. However, a new European study shows it is important to avoid each other's slipstream when doing these activities. This info is the result of a study by engineers and aerodynamicists at KU Leuven in Belgium and Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands. We’ve typically been told that appropriate and effective social distancing is 1 to 2 metres, but that’s really only effective when you are standing still inside or with minimal wind outside. But going for a walk, run, or bike ride you should be more careful. When someone breathes, sneezes, or coughs during a run, those particles remain...
2019 was a difficult year for me as I dealt with multiple injuries and setbacks, one after the other. At times, I felt very overwhelmed and frustrated as I had so much planned, including my first half marathon. As the year is coming to a close, I have learned that I really couldn’t have planned or prevented these setbacks but I can chose to deal with them in a healthy way. With not being able to run for more than two months, I had a lot of time to reflect and came up with a list of things I could do to show my body, mind and spirit some love. Fresh air: A simple 20-minute walk outdoors can make you...

When I started running in my 20s, I mostly ran solo and never trained consistently. There was always one excuse or another: it’s too hot, it’s too cold, I’m too tired, I have work to do, I have no time, etc. . . . When I got back into running in 2017, after six months of running on my own and surviving a 10k race, I mustered the courage to join the North York RunNinjas, a running group that met close to my home. I was nervous at first because I didn’t know if I would be able to keep up with their pace. The first time I ran with them, they did a 15-km point-to-point run. At about 12...
Ever feel like consistency isn’t happening? Feeling overwhelmed by each day’s training plan? Always putting everything ahead of your running? I was feeling that for a very long time even in April 2018 when I was starting my second marathon training cycle. I started off strong in the first week nailing each one of my runs but then I started to slip. Work became more important than my three or four runs a week. My exhaustion started to kick in. I was falling behind — very behind. My solution: turning to Instagram. I was following some incredible runners who had phenomenal stories and had either been training for a world major or had just finished running the Boston Marathon. How...
