2019 was a difficult year for me as I dealt with multiple injuries and setbacks, one after the other. At times, I felt very overwhelmed and frustrated as I had so much planned, including my first half marathon. As the year is coming to a close, I have learned that I really couldn’t have planned or prevented these setbacks but I can chose to deal with them in a healthy way. With not being able to run for more than two months, I had a lot of time to reflect and came up with a list of things I could do to show my body, mind and spirit some love. Fresh air: A simple 20-minute walk outdoors can make you...
By Joyce Law My friends often ask me how I can run in the winter. Actually, winter is my favourite time of year for running because there’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing choices. Here are some tips to help you run through the winter. Hands – Under 5C, I start wearing gloves. When it’s not too cold yet, I’ll just wear dollar store knit gloves – they are great because the knit material provides breathability. Once it gets below -5C, I wear proper running gloves. My fingers get cold really easily though and when it’s really cold, running gloves aren’t even enough so I might have to invest in some mittens this winter or double up...

Race season is upon us and, once again, I’ve signed up for way too many races this year. It’s only April and I have already done my first 3 races of 2019 over 3 consecutive weekends. You can read about my race reports (ATB30K, Spring Run-Off 8k, and NYC Shape Half) over on my blog. Each time I do a race, I try to learn from it so I can be more prepared for the next race. Here’s what I’ve learned over the past couple of years. I hope this will be helpful! Leave a comment if you have any other tips! A few days before your race: Start carbo loading but don’t go overboard; Drink lots of water; Try...
When I originally decided I was going to run a half marathon, I had just gotten back into running. I had no idea what I was getting myself into, nor the amount of work I would have to put in to get myself there. I also had not given any thought to injuries since I was sure I would be one of the lucky ones to get through my training without any issues. WRONG. Those who know me could have told me this, I am unlucky when it comes to injuries and always at the worst times. In December, I was a few weeks into my training when I got sick with the worst chest cold I have ever had...
